On May 28th, 2024, Kabaka Foundation joined the global celebration of World Menstrual Hygiene Day by engaging 800 adolescent school-going girls from Dome M/A, Anglican, and Really Maranatha schools in Accra. The event aimed to raise awareness about menstrual health and hygiene, break societal taboos, and empower young girls with the tools and knowledge to manage their periods with dignity and confidence.
Empowering Girls Through Menstrual Education
The celebration featured interactive workshops led by health professionals, where the students learned about the menstrual cycle, proper hygiene practices, and how to manage their periods effectively. The sessions also addressed myths and misconceptions about menstruation, fostering an open and supportive environment for the girls to ask questions and share their experiences.
In addition to the educational component, Kabaka Foundation distributed sanitary pads to all 800 participants. This practical support is part of the foundation’s ongoing efforts to combat period poverty, which continues to affect many girls in Ghana, causing them to miss school and feel isolated during their periods.
Breaking the Silence Around Menstruation
The CEO of Kabaka Foundation, speaking at the event, emphasized the importance of education and awareness in breaking the stigma surrounding menstruation:
“Menstruation is a natural process, yet it remains a barrier for many girls due to stigma and lack of resources. Today, we are not just providing sanitary pads; we are equipping these girls with the confidence and knowledge they need to thrive.”
Student Experiences
The event had a significant impact on the participants. Many expressed gratitude for the opportunity to learn and feel supported.
Ama, a 13-year-old student, shared, “I’ve always been shy to talk about my period, but today I learned so much and feel proud of who I am.”
Another participant, Jennifer, said, “The sanitary pads we received will help me stay in school and focus on my studies without worrying.”
